    The Department of Biology was founded in 1948, based on which the School of Life Sciences was established in 1994. The School is composed of two departments (Department of Biology and Department of Biotechnology), two research institutes (Institute of Genetics and Cytology, and Institute of Grassland Science), and one national laboratory (Laboratory of Grassland Ecology Engineering). The School also has a variety of teaching and research facilities including the Electron Microscope Center, the Experimental Center, the Biology Library, the Biological Specimens Museum, etc. The School occupies a total of floor space of 18,000 square meters, providing spacious room for teaching and scientific researches.

    Currently, the School of Life Sciences has a faculty of 102 members, among them 33 are entitled the full professorship, 28 are associate professors and 10 are lecturers.

    The School of Life Sciences has two undergraduate majors of Biology and Biotechnology, and a wide range of graduate programs including zoology, botany, physiology, genetics, cell biology, ecology, microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, etc. The School currently enrolls 452 undergraduates, 507 master students and 164 Ph.D. students.     The School has been actively engaged in scientific research. Over the past 5 years, the School faculty members have undertaken 208 research programs from various sectors, with a total research grant of approximately 100 million yuan. Meanwhile, the School has published a total of 737 research articles in academic journals, of which 142 are Scientific Citation Indexed (SCI).

    The School of Life Sciences has established a broad link with institutions from other countries, and is actively involved in international academic exchange and cooperation.
